In this year, the Five Churches Festival will be held for the 18th time, which is the only festival in Hungary to was awarded the EFFE Laureate Award by the European Festivals Federation. It is about faith and acceptance, dialogue between cultures and religions.
It is located on one single street of Győr-Újváros, in a church from each of the historic European churches. For centuries, these five churches have stood side by side, proclaiming the values of European Judaeo-Christian culture and the possibility and importance of discussion.
From the beginning, the festival programme has included sacred theatre productions, which are presented in church halls and chamber theatre venues.
In 2023, in conjunction with the Theatre Olympics, the festival organisers have selected international and local productions on the theme of war and warfare. In addition to Hungary, from Asia to Europe, from family feuds to the great world wars, from personal experiences to generational traumas, presenting a wide spectrum of world views and artistic solutions.
